Federal Govt of Nigeria And ICAC Partner To Create 1.4M Jobs In Cotton Textile Sector

The Federal Government, in partnership with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), has initiated the resuscitation of Nigeria’s cotton sector. The goal is to create more than 1.4 million jobs in the cotton/textile sector each year, with a focus on developing key components of the cotton value chain such as farming, weaving, ginning, and cotton linking, all in line with President Bola Tinubu’s industrialization drive.

This was the result of a meeting on Tuesday between Vice President Kashim Shettima and an ICAC delegation led by its Executive Director, Mr Eric Trachtenberg, in the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Following remarks by the ICAC state house digital delegation and other meeting participants, Vice President Kashim Shettima asked stakeholders to develop a strategy for the resurrection of Nigeria’s cotton/textile sector, stating that “it is time to work more and talk less”.

The Vice President pledged that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will make concerted efforts to ensure that Nigeria capitalizes on opportunities in the cotton value chain, including regaining ICAC membership.

He welcomed the delegation for their visit and acknowledged ICAC’s dedication to the growth of the sector in Africa, stating that “your diverse backgrounds in ICAC provide a nuanced understanding of the complexities and opportunities in the cotton value chain.”
